Dear Participant:
The goal of this workshop is to improve materials modelling and processing by applying theoretical methods using fractal concepts for textured and hierarchical structures which occur frequently in materials science. The meeting will highlight the problems that currently stand in the way of progress and outline new approaches in the particular fields of fracture and textured materials. We expect the discussions to be of great interest to very large scientific and engineering communities and therefore the issues raised in the workshop will be collected into a volume entitled "Fractal Analysis and Modelling of Materials: New Directions". The volume will contain a transcription of the panel discussions, which will be videotaped for this purpose, as well as manuscripts. We encourage you to prepare a manuscript that, in addition to presenting your work, also emphasizes your view regarding the major problems to be attacked and the ways to approach these problems. We must be aware that outlining new directions cannot be expected to consist only of step-by-step deductions and often involves a fair amount of educated guessing. Therefore we welcome speculative ideas in the belief that these will make the volume more stimulating. By preparing the manuscript after the meeting we hope that the discussions will have time to sink in, provide the authors with new points of view and that these can enrich the contributions.
The volume will be published by World Scientific and instructions for preparation of camera-ready manuscripts are available. A LaTeX template for these instructions is also available if you wish to use it to prepare the manuscript and will be emailed upon request. Manuscripts should be sent to:
